Improving northern Ontario’s economy appears to be part of the plan Canada’s NDP leader has for this area.
During a conversation with Acadia Broadcasting’s John Ongaro this morning, Jagmeet Singh pointed out he wants to connect new immigrants with job opportunities in the north.
“We want to really help tackle the problem that there’s opportunities for work, and there’s people that have opportunities available, but there’s not enough folks that can work in those jobs.”
The NDP leader also addressed the need to deal with the number of people affected by drugs.
“We want to make sure that we tackle an opioid crisis that’s more and more of a crisis for folks in the north. It’s something that’s hurting people across Canada.”
Singh also feels the struggles he’s faced in life are what separate him from the other leaders in the federal election race, such as the addiction and financial struggles his family endured.
“I made it through those tough times when people helped me out. And, a lot of folks took care of me when I was down and out. And we had a lot of programs in place, like affordable university, that made life easier for me, so I want to invest in people.”
Singh will address supporters at LU’s Study Coffeehouse tonight at 7.
