An exciting and excellent partnership has been formed between Lakehead University and the Municipality of Sioux Lookout.
A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed to support the Innovation Station.
Mayor Doug Lawrance says the initiative puts different Universities together with northern communities and businesses to look at projects and research in Ontario’s North and Far North.
Sioux Lookout acts as the lead but the information from the Innovation Station is available to all local communities.
Lawrance says work is already well underway.
“Right now we have a company that’s interested in Smart Drones. Very interested in setting up a Drone testing site in Sioux Lookout to look at monitoring forest fires and flooding in the Far North associated with ice break-up’s.”
Lawrance says another project on the goal relates to innovative housing options for the region.
There’s also a partnership with Lac Seul surrounding a Bio-mass project for heating communities.
An air transportation program is also on the go.
The MOU outlines the communication, research and framework of the Innovation Station related to the municipality and the school.
