Election season is officially underway following the Prime Minister’s visit to the Governor-General asking for Parliament to be dissolved.
The Liberal’s Justin Trudeau discussed his government’s track record on improving the lives of middle and low-income families.
“By cutting taxes for the middle class and raising them on the wealthiest 1%. We stopped sending child benefit cheques to millionaires.”
Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer didn’t go into specifics but mentioned his party would also be focusing on taxpayer pocketbooks.
“Over the next five weeks or so, we will be outlining our vision for the country to put more money in the pockets of Canadians and help them get ahead.”
The NDP’s Jagmeet Singh said his party if elected would commit to a national universal pharmacare program.
“We can do that but only if we have the courage to take on the lobbyists and the corporate interests.”
The Green’s Elizabeth May told her followers her party will not ignore injustice.
“That’s why the centre of everything we do will be respect for the United Nation’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.”
Meanwhile, we have a full slate of candidates in place for both the Thunder Bay-Rainy River and Thunder Bay-Superior North ridings.
On the city’s north side we have former city councillor Frank Pullia running for the Conservatives, taking on Liberal incumbent Patty Hajdu. The NDP’s candidate is former Deputy Grand Chief of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation Anna Betty Achneepineskum. Former MP Bruce Hyer is running for the Greens and Youssef Khanjari is running for the PPC.
On the city’s south side running for the Liberal’s is a doctor, Marcus Powlowski, former city councillor Linda Rydholm is representing the Conservatives. Yuk-Sem Won is a college instructor who is the NDP candidate for Thunder Bay-Rainy River and Amanda Moddejonge is running for the Greens. She is also a former member of the Canadian Military. The People’s Party of candidate is Andrew Hartnell.
In the Kenora riding, they’ll have incumbent Liberal Bob Nault, the NDP’s Rudy Turtle, Conservative Eric Melillo and the Green’s Kirsi Ralko.
Election day is October 21st.
