The Experimental Lakes Area between Vermilion Bay and Kenora is celebrating 51-years of freshwater research.
Operations Manager Roger Mollot says they’ve been able to conduct some groundbreaking work since opening their doors in 1968.
He notes one of their biggest and most important studies has been the impact on mercury on our commercial and recreational fisheries.
Mollot says recent research has been focused on chemicals in the wastewater that is coming out of our cities and affecting the aquatic food chain.
Another project centres on the accidental release of oil into the aquatic eco-system and its impact.
Mollot says the ELA has had “tremendous influence on environmental policy and regulations within Canada and around the world on how to manage our watershed, manage our lakes and rivers, from some of the environmental pollution.”
