After two years, Ontario’s Human Rights Tribunal has ruled on a woman’s claim she was unfairly kicked out of Sandy Lake First Nation.
Angele Kamalatisit told a tribunal in 2017 she was removed from the community several years prior because the band council had an issue with her common-law partner Ringo Fiddler.
The Tribunal member George E. Ulyatt ruled that the band targeted Kamalatisit since her partner was a band member and was sheltered from retaliatory action.
He goes on to write the actions against Kamalatisit were unfounded and designed as a way to retaliate against Fiddler’s involvement in local politics.
The band will have to pay damages of $20,000 for pain and suffering and interest from August 2012 to the date of payment.
