A 62-year-old woman is dead after an encounter with a black bear on Red Pine Island on Rainy Lake.
Provincial Police received a call around 6:30 Sunday evening from a woman who believed her daughter was attacked by a bear.
The victim had gone to check on her dogs and had not returned.
Officers arrived and found the body in close vicinity to a bear.
OPP will only say the animal was “dispatched” by officers.
There were two other bears at the scene that were a threat to officers during their investigation.
They continue to roam the island.
Police say the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is currently determining its next steps.
The incident took place on a secluded island and there was no other risk to public safety.
