Changes to Canada’s Labour Code are coming for federally regulated workers which the government says in some cases are not protected by a union.
Thunder Bay-Superior North MP Patty Hajdu says the adjustments are needed since the Code hasn’t been changed since the mid-60’s.
Those working in the media, telecommunications, banking or airports will see these improvements.
Hajdu says the changes include “Three paid leave days for example, so that people don’t have to choose between staying home with a sick child or losing a day of pay. A rest period after five hours of work of 30 minutes.”
It also includes support for those dealing with family violence.
Hajdu says “They could lose their jobs if they were not able to perform work over time. These are basic protections that help work-life balance.”
The updates take effect on Sunday.
The Labour Minister adds the changes are the right thing to do, even though most employers understand the need to protect workers’ health and safety.
Hajdu adds the goal is to protect the most vulnerable workers and to ensure everyone has a safe workplace.
