The town of Fort Frances is calling on the province to cancel woodcutting rights Resolute Forest Products has in the Crossroute Forest.
Town leaders are upset with restrictions placed on a title for the former Fort Frances mill in the recent sale to Riveredges Developments.
One provision prohibits the facility from being used to produce certain pulp or paper products like newsprint, kraft market pulp, or tissue. Another would prohibit a company from speaking with the provincial government for a ten-year period on wood access now relied upon by Resolute.
Mayor June Caul says they find the conditions unacceptable
“It would appear to us that Resolute intends to destroy the mail, sink the public investment, and remove the economic engine of our district,” says Caul.
Mayor June Caul calls it corporate conduct that should be punished.
“We call on the province to take action to immediately cancel the Sustainable Forest License granted to Resolute for the Crossroute Forest and seeking interests from other investors,” says Caul.
Caul says they’ve also sought legal advice on what other actions the town can do.
They’ve also reached out to Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford who is meeting with officials from Resolute in Toronto this week.
