Speaking to the Dryden Rotary Club about the problems being faced in Far North communities.
That’s what Lachie MacFadden did as he spoke about the work he’s done in communities such as Pikangikum, Webequie, Wapekeka, Big Trout Lake among many others.
He mentions that the biggest problems being faced in these communities is substance abuse and suicides and talks about how the average age of suicides has gone down to early and mid teens instead of 18-24 years old.
MacFadden also helped many of the younger residents with a camping and travelling experiences.
He says they would offer an experience to people in Pikangikum to go to a camp about 20 kilometers from the community with a new group every two weeks.
MacFadden says after those two weeks many of the campers would head back to the community seeming a lot better.
He also says more work needs to be done towards reconciliation and preserving the culture of indigenous people.
He brought up indigenous holidays and how they should be more widely recognized in the mainstream of Canadian culture.
