The City of Thunder Bay is making waves again nationally because they have the highest murder rate in the country, per capita.
Police Chief Sylvie Hauth is repeating what many political leaders in the city have been saying, that their woes are not much different from other large municipalities.
“A lot of the mental health and opioid crisis are felt in many communities and I think we very much share, in terms of the strain, that is being put on all of our policing agencies.”
Hauth doesn’t anticipate the cities murder rate to get much better too soon.
Thunder Bay already has five recorded murders this year.
Mayor Bill Mauro says they still have work to do if they want to put their high murder rate in the rearview mirror.
Mauro stresses they are trying to do everything they can from the city level and looking to the province for support as well, but he does not see any help coming anytime soon.
