Demonstrators made their concerns heard outside an event by the the People’s Party of Canada in Thunder Bay.
Tuesday night, while Thunder Bay-Rainy River candidate Andrew Hartnell and newly-announced Thunder Bay-Superior North hopeful Youssef Khanjari met with local voters, protesters voiced their criticism of Maxime Bernier’s new party and its policies.
Both events drew around three dozen people each.
Protesters set up beside the parking lot of the Italian Hall, leading chants like “No xenophobia at the Italian Hall”, and “Gender issues are not a special interest”.
They could be heard chanting “Stop climate change denial”, pointing to the PPC’s criticism of what it terms “climate change alarmism.”
Signs also called Bernier’s policies transphobic, referring to the PPC’s claims that Bill C-16 is an “attack on conscience.”
That legislation amended the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Criminal Code to add gender identity and gender expression as protected categories from discrimination.
Both candidates told Acadia News that the protesters’ claims are inaccurate and don’t reflect the PPC’s platform.
