Communities across Northwestern Ontario are being asked to open their doors to be an evacuation centre.
Sioux Lookout and Thunder Bay have already stepped up to host fire evacuees.
Kenora MP Bob Nault says he’s trying to get more municipalities involved.
“For Pikangikum’s point of view, one of the major issues is language. Most of the kids just speak Ojibway, period, no other language. So you have to be at a place where they feel comfortable. So being in their own Treaty #3 area makes sense to me.”
He stresses he’s willing to work with municipalities to help them become an evacuation site.
The City of Dryden says it’s very difficult to accommodate the evacuees because hotel space is at a premium.
Evacuees from Keewaywin and Pikangikum are spread out across Ontario and even Regina, Saskatchewan.
