Some much needed rain has helped with the forest fire situation in Northwestern Ontario.
No new fires were reported yesterday. (Tuesday)
Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry Information Officer Jonathan Scott says the fire hazard is low to moderate in the western portions of the region and high to extreme in the eastern parts.
Much of the region is under a Rainfall Warning today. (Wednesday)
Scott notes Red Lake Fire #40, which is 31,762 hectares near Nungesser Lake, received some rainfall which has helped crews in the area.
He adds Red Lake Fire #23, which is 92,648 hectares near Keewaywin, got some badly needed rain.
“The fire has received anywhere from a trace amount of rain to 5-millimetres, so that’s helped reduce fire behaviour on this fire.”
Red Lake Fire #39 is now 40,439 hectares and continues to burn about 6-kilometres southwest of Pikangikum on the opposite side of Pikangikum Lake.
Crews have been aided by heavy rain at times.
Firefighters are now establishing hose lines on the east and northwest sides of the blaze.
