The province is spending an additional $32,360 this year to support midwife services in Kenora-Rainy River.
Grand Council Treaty #3 is receiving $25,000, while $7,360 is going towards Kenora Midwives.
Northern Development and Mines Minister Greg Rickford says the investment will help more local families access additional choices in care during a pregnancy, labour and birth.
He says it will also allow for six weeks of support for a mother once a baby is born.
Rickford adds the government is working to allow midwives to prescribe more medications to clients in an effort to reduce wait times for patients.
Other steps being taken:
-Support up to 90 new midwife graduates entering the field.
-Increase access to culturally appropriate midwife care by expanding Indigenous midwife programs.
-Ensure midwife practice groups can update their technology to continue providing quality services.
