The Northwestern Health Unit is out with some helpful tips to help you stay cool during this heat rush.
Health Promoter Stephanie Charles says heat related illnesses are a real risk, especially to those who are elderly, young, chronically ill or under housed.
She suggests to always seek shade, but if you are out in the sun to ensure you are wearing sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.
Charles stresses it’s important to stay hydrated and drink lot’s of water.
She also suggests checking in with friends and family who may be at a higher risk of suffering from a heat related illness.
The Health Unit is also preaching water quality safety as many of us head to the beach to cool off.
Charles says you should always check the beach or lake water before you swim, noting if the water looks murky or there are physical hazards, to stay away.
The health unit closely monitors over 28 public beaches across the region.
Charles says staff sample beach water quality and respond to any complaints from the public.
She notes signs are also posted advising residents whether or not it’s safe to enter the water.
