The fire hazard in northwestern Ontario remains high to extreme.
There are currently 26 fires in the region; eight are out of control, four are being held, six are under control, with eight being watched.
There was only one new start reported yesterday (Thursday), a small blaze that has been extinguished about 20-kilometres north of Webequie First Nation.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is also reporting that good progress has been made in their efforts to fight fires in the Sioux Lookout district.
Two significant fires of note:
1. Red Lake Fire #40: The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry continues to aggressively attack a 6,973 hectare fire near Nungesser Lake, about 40-kilometres north of Red Lake.
Officials spent the entire day yesterday (Thursday) with an air attack and ensuring sprinklers were set-up to protect property.
Crews continue to reinforce control lines and guards along the fire.
2. Red Lake Fire #23: The forest fire burning 12 kilometres southwest of Keewaywin First Nation is now at 54,643 hectares in size.
Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry spokesperson Jonathan Scott says the priority right now is getting the blaze back to its natural boundaries.
Scott says the fire is a top priority and sprinklers are being set-up to help protect property.
