New Federal gun reform legislation will have no impact on local hunters.
Kenora MP Bob Nault believes people won’t notice any difference, noting the government just wanted to tweak the system.
The legislation has passed the Senate and the Conservatives are vowing to repeal the bill is elected, calling it a “backdoor gun registry.”
Nault notes the changes protect gun owners, keep firearms out of the hands of people who shouldn’t have them and respects the rights of hunters.
He stresses all they are doing is strengthening the system and making it safer for Canadians.
Nault says “you can’t purchase a gun unless you can show that you have a licence already or you can’t sell unless you have a licence. These are all sort of little gaps that were intended to help strengthen the legislation.”
Nault notes there will also be a requirement for commercial firearm owners to record what’s happening when they make a sale, something he says is already happening.
He stresses it will be business as usual for firearm owners in the northwest.
