The PC government is prepared to give public sector workers a raise of 1% a year for the next three years.
Treasurer Board President Peter Bethlenfalvy says it’s necessary to save services and jobs.
Bethlenfalvy says “if we did not take this action, thousands of jobs could be at risk. As we’ve stated clearly, our government is committed to protecting front-line workers and the vital services they deliver.”
He notes he still wants to hear from people on the proposal and a website will be established to collect input.
The legislation doesn’t impose a wage freeze, wage rollback or lead to job losses.
Bethlenfalvy says “what we’ve tabled today we think is reasonable, it’s fair and also, I want to be clear, it’s sustainable.”
Labour unions call it an attack on collective bargaining and workers.
Bethlenfalvy stresses they aren’t going to war with unions.
