The City of Dryden is looking at extending the hours of the Highway #502 Landfill.
A proposal has been presented to Council to keep the site open Monday to Saturday, from 8 until 5, on a yearly basis.
Public Works Manager Blake Poole says it would require the hiring of an extra staff member.
Poole says the plan would be to use that individual at the landfill year round but also in the plowing of sidewalks during the Winter.
He adds the proposal will give the City some flexibility with scheduling in various departments.
Poole says Council asked staff to look at options to extend the hours of the landfill and this was the final consensus.
The total increase in the 2019 budget would be $76,000-$81,000.
Council appears to be on board with the recommendation, noting it provides an important service for the community.
Mayor Greg Wilson says he would like to see Public Works take a second look at Winter scheduling at the Landfill and possibly adjust hours accordingly to traffic.
Others talked about the importance of having another body available to clear sidewalks in the midst of new provincial regulations regarding snow clearing.
New standards require municipalities “to reduce the snow to a depth less or equal to 8-centimetres within 48-hours.
Public Works admits they do have to put more of an emphasis on snow clearing next Winter.
Council could vote on the new position at the May 21st open meeting.
