Women are more likely to die from a stroke then men, even though they have fewer of them.
That is just one of the findings from a recent report by the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Charlene Comrie says women are three times more likely to have a stroke when pregnant.
Comrie says they are also more susceptible after menopause and when they reach their elderly years.
The high risk factors include having high blood pressure, an irregular heart beat, smoking, taking oral contraceptives and those on hormone replacement therapy.
The report also found that if a woman survives her first stroke, she is more likely to suffer much more serious disabilities.
Comrie adds almost twice as many women as men end up in long term care after their first stroke.
