Plenty to celebrate at Dryden High School Wednesday night, as the Eagles honoured their top athletes of the year.
Sarah Benson and Monica Tourond ended up sharing Female Athlete of the Year honours and Benson says she couldn’t be happier.
Benson says she’s thankful that she got this experience as an Eagle, noting its been a great four years that she wouldn’t trade for the world.
She says it was a rough start to this year as she sustained a serious injury and wasn’t sure if she would even be able to compete in athletics.
However, Benson said she was able to persevere thanks to the support of her teammates, coaches and parents.
Benson represented DHS in numerous OFSAA tournaments, but notes this years visit to North Bay with the Soccer team stands out as one of her favourite memories.
Benson was also named Senior Girls Volleyball MVP and Soccer MVP.
Monica Tourond says it was an honour to win the award and play alongside Benson.
Personally, Tourond says winning the award is exciting, stressing she put in a lot of hard work over the past four years.
She says she leaves DHS with a number of great memories, noting she was proud to play with all of her teammates during her time at the school.
Tourond was also named Senior Girls Basketball MVP.
Liam Wrolstad shattered several school and league records in Football and he was named Male Athlete of the Year.
Wrolstad says this years undefeated season and Winnipeg High School Football championship clearly is his top memory.
He says this latest honour couldn’t happen without the support of his teammates, coaches and families.
Wrolstad thanked his family for the years of unwavering support, driving him to and from practice, and always making the trek to Winnipeg to watch him play.
