It's a great day for Metis people and all of Canada.
That's the reaction of a jubilant Gary Lipinski, the President of the Metis Nation of Ontario, following a Supreme Court of Canada ruling classifying Metis as status Indians.
Lipinski says tens of thousands of Metis and non-status Indians will now be able to receive the same programs, services and rights as others.
He notes they never received funding for such things as education and uninsured health benefits.
Lipinski says for over a century they have been a "hot potato", with both levels of senior government squabbling over who should be responsible for dealing with their issues.
He says the decision is long overdue and he believes they can finally make some progress on Metis finding their rightful and proper place within Canadian Confederation.
Lipinski says the government must now negotiate in good faith with the Metis nation on a whole series of priority issues.
