A devastating mix-up in the Humboldt Broncos crash with the coroner in Saskatchewan misidentifying one of the victims.
Xavier Labelle had been previously confirmed dead but is, in fact, alive while Parker Tobin is among the 15 who were killed after the team bus and a tractor-trailer collided.
“I don’t think anything we could ever say would be enough,” says Drew Wilby of Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Justice.
Wilby says new information came to light last night that raised questions with the health care professionals and in turn they were able to positively ID Xavier Labelle.
“I can’t even imagine putting myself in those families’ shoes — to first get the notice that their loved ones have been in a collision of this nature, and then to find out that who they thought was their loved one wasn’t potentially actually their loved one.”
Wilby apologized to the families on behalf of the Office of the Chief Coroner and the government of Saskatchewan for the error. He says they’re confident in the identities of all the others involved in the crash.
