Economic development, finances, forming partnerships and better communication.
The major themes coming out of the All-Candidates Forum in Dryden Tuesday night.
The candidates for Mayor were asked what the City would do to attract new business to the community.
Craig Nuttall says Dryden is making strides in that area.
Nuttall stated that 2-groups have expressed interest in setting up shop but he couldn’t provide any additional information.
He says the key for economic expansion is forming partnerships and listening to the needs of potential businesses.
Greg Wilson says the City must get its house in order to attract new business to the community.
Wilson says that includes keeping the City clean, forming partnerships and promoting the community.
He also believes the Chamber of Commerce should be involved in the process.
Shayne MacKinnon says the City needs a full functioning economic development office in order to attract new business to the community.
MacKinnon says they need someone to assist people in site selection and navigating them through the process.
The candidates were also asked what they would do to improve relations with the Chamber of Commerce.
Shayne MacKinnon says there was no Council representation on the Chamber until he came forward and volunteered to sit as a director.
He says they’ve had a close working relationship.
Craig Nuttall fired back stating Mel Fisher was the Chamber rep and Council hasn’t received any recent reports of Chamber activities.
He says his door is always open and is always willing to work with officials.
Greg Wilson says the City has an opportunity to engage the Chamber and other service organizations.
Wilson stresses they should be relying on their expertise.
The candidates were asked about the current fiscal situation and ways to fix it.
Greg Wilson offered to give up his Mayor’s salary if elected.
He says the City was put in a bad position because of poor accountability and a lack of unity.
Wilson adds there was micro-managing and Council didn’t respect the staff positions.
Shayne MacKinnon says taxation and finances should be the first item on their strategic plan.
MacKinnon is also calling for the creation of a Community Finance Advisory Committee, with members of the public involved.
He is also promising community consultations and more transparency to discuss City finances.
Craig Nuttall says they are going in the right direction with the support of the Chief Administrative Officer.
Nuttall says they now have monthly financial statements from every City department to see exactly how much money they are spending.
Nuttall adds they have a bright, young and energetic Assistant Treasurer keeping a close eye on the finances and a Treasurer has been hired.
