Breast cancer survival rates are significantly improving according to a new Cancer Care Ontario report.
Regional Primary Care Lead in the Northwest Dr. Nicole Zavagnin says deaths have gone down about 42% for women aged 50 to 74, between the years of 1990 and 2012.
She credits improvements in breast cancer treatment as well as an increase in the number of women who receive a mammogram for the enhanced survival rates.
However, she notes the number of women returning for their regular mammogram has steadily gone down over the past few years.
Dr. Zavagnin says they will continue to concentrate on educational campaigns to improve participation rates.
