Premier Kathleen Wynne is rejecting calls to raise the Harmonized Sales Tax by 1%.
The Association of Municipalities of Ontario says the increase will help municipalities offset the cost of infrastructure improvements.
Speaking to municipal reps in Ottawa, Wynne says she doesn’t think there’s been enough dialogue at the local level on that idea.
She is pledging to work with municipal leaders to find a better way to pay for infrastructure upgrades.
Wynne adds with her government’s focus on trying to reduce costs, a tax increase flies in the face of that objective.
NDP Leader Andrea Horwath and PC leader Patrick Brown are also opposed to any HST hike.
