Canada has banned the Boeing 737 Max 8 from our airspace.
Transportation Minister Marc Garneau told reporters his decision was made after he received new data.
“The information has to do with satellite tracking data that is collected when aircraft take off and provide information on their course and any fluctuations in their vertical profile. My experts have looked at this and compared it to the flight with Lion Air. There are similarities that sort of exceed a certain threshold in our minds with respect to the possible cause of what happened in Ethiopia. This is not conclusive, but it is something that points possibly in that direction.”
The Transportation Minister says there can’t be any Boeing 737 Max 8 or Max 9 flying into or out of Canada which impacts Sunwing, Air Canada and WestJet.
It also has an impact on airlines from outside of the country that previously would have been able to fly in and out of the country.
New data led to Garneau making the decision to ground the plane that was involved in a fatal crash in Ethiopia on the weekend.
