There’s no longer a future for Future Shop in Canada.
In an abrupt move, its parent company Best Buy announced this morning 66 locations are closing effective today. Another 65 stores will transition to Best Buy locations over the next week.
Customers at the Thunder Bay store are met with locked doors, and there’s a sign in the window that says it’s merging to become Best Buy.
There aren’t any details yet on how many jobs in Thunder Bay account for the approximate 1,500 employees across Canada affected by the closure.
The Future Shop brand was bought by Best Buy in the early 2000’s for almost $600 million – although they’d been operating Future Shop as a separate division up until now.
