A pitch was made by Dryden Area Hockey Canada Skills Academy instructor Bill Reid for financial support and Dryden Rotary quickly responded.
Reid addressed Rotary members Wednesday, promoting the program and its benefits to local students.
He was shocked, surprised and thrilled when the Club came forward with a $4,000 donation.
Reid says he can now use that money to purchase equipment that they don’t have right now.
He stresses the Academy gives kids, who might not get the opportunity to play hockey, a chance to play.
Reid notes there are roughly 40 students in Dryden in need of equipment right now.
The public is encouraged to drop-off sticks, skates, helmets, shoulder pads and other items at New Prospect School.
Reid says the program promotes leadership and time management skills, while keeping kids active and healthy.
He adds it has resulted in improved grades and attendance.
Reid says he’s seen a number of success stories, including the development of current Kenora ‘AAA’ Midget Thistles forward Ben Hackl.
Hackl will be heading off to a NCAA Showcase this Summer, giving him a chance to show-off his skills.
Reid notes the camp is an Academic opportunity as well.
