The Supreme Court of Canada has upheld the conviction of a Grassy Narrows man on a manslaughter charge.
The case of Clifford Kokopenace reached the supreme court after his lawyers argued that a lack of aboriginal representation in the jury pool amounted to a violation of his constitutional rights.
In a 5-2 ruling, the supreme court justices say a reasonable effort was made to ensure there was adequate representation in of aboriginal people in the jury pool in Kenora.
The ruling overturns an Ontario Court of Appeal ruling in 2011 that acquitted Kokopenace over the jury roll issue and threw out his 2008 conviction.
Kokopenace was originally charged with the stabbing death of a friend on Grassy Narrows.
