Northern Health Unit’s are calling on the province for a second look at social assistance rates.
According to a recent study, the cost of food has gone up 10 % in the last year.
The study also shows low-income households have only about $200 left in their monthly budget, after paying for rent and food.
Regional Spokesperson Catherine Schwartz-Mendez says that amount would have to cover the cost of everything else a family of four needs to buy for the month.
Schwartz-Mendez says the study puts the cost of food into different income scenarios, and found many people on Ontario Works can’t stretch their food dollar.
The study monitors the price of basic foods at area grocery stores.
