Injuries In International Tug Of War Event

Several people have been injured in a game tug of war between Fort Frances and International Falls.

At least two were transported to hospital by land ambulance.

Others suffered rope burns and lacerations.

Residents on both sides of the Rainy River were pulling a rope across the river at the time.

Some witnesses say the rope on the Canadian side lunged forward with enough force to move a truck the rope was attached as an anchor.

The rope was also anchored to a truck on the US side of the river.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch In Fort Frances Area

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for parts of the region, including Seine River Village-Mine Centre and Atikokan-Upsala-Quetico

Environment Canada downgraded the watch from this morning's thunderstorm warning, which they said could bring wind gusts up to 90 kilometres per hour, and over 50 milimetres of rain.

Canada Introduces $16.6B In Steel, Aluminum Tariffs

The federal government is imposing over $16 billion worth of tariffs on U.S. goods, in retaliation against American taxes on steel and aluminum. 

Foreign Affairs minister Chrystia Freeland announced the measures today in Hamilton, Ontario, saying a 25% charge on steel products and with 10% tariffs on aluminum and other goods will kick in Sunday. 

Those include U.S. coffee, yogurt, refrigerators, whisky and water heaters. 

"We will not escalate, and we will not back down," Freeland says, emphasizing the "regret with which we take these countermeasures". 

Council Paves The Way For New Housing Complex

The City of Dryden has approved a site plan agreement with Bridge Road Investments to develop a seniors housing complex.

The apartment complex on Van Horne Avenue will consist of three, 24-unit, 4-storey buildings, with indoor tenant parking on the first floor of each building.

Additional visitor parking will be located on the property.

The next step is the official transfer of land to Bridge Road Investments.

Ontario Cabinet Introduced; Greg Rickford Will Be Busy

As expected, Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford has a seat at the provincial Cabinet table.

Rickford will be busy as he has been named Minister of Energy, Northern Development and Mines and the Minister of Indigenous Affairs.

Another northern Conservative member also has an important role.

Nipissing's Vic Fedeli will assume the senior role of Finance Minister and Chair of Cabinet. 

Jeff Yurek, of the riding of Elgin-Middlesex-London, will serve as the Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry.

The new government will consist of 21 Cabinet members.

Community Celebration For Dryden Museum Saturday

It will be a festive atmosphere at the Dryden and District Museum Saturday.

The Museum is celebrating 30-years at the historic Hambleton House on Van Horne Avenue.

A community event is being held from 11 until 2.

There will be Pioneer themed games and a scavenger hunt as well as refreshments and food.

Tickets are $10 and all proceeds go to support the Museum.

Pistol Gear Stolen In Dryden

One day away from Dryden hosting the Ontario Provincial Pistol Championship, a local competitor is without his gear.

Someone broke into a truck Thursday night and stole a backpack containing competition gear.

Among the items missing includes magazines, holsters and other gun apparel.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Dryden Police.

Greg Rickford Concentrating On Getting Settled In Locally

Lots of intrigue surrounding the a planned slimmed down cabinet of premier-designate Doug Ford.

Kenora-River MPP elect Greg Rickford isn't saying whether he'll get a cabinet post during Friday's swearing-in ceremony.

Instead, Rickford says his focus in recent weeks has been setting up his constituency offices in Dryden, Kenora and Fort Frances.

Rickford says ideally he'd like to set up some sort of mobile constituency office, that would be able to travel to some of the smaller communities in the riding.

Redden's Open Despite Devestating Fire

Redden's, just outside of Kenora on Highway 17, says it will almost be business as usual this Canada Day long weekend, despite a devastating fire.

A large blaze broke out just after noon Thursday in a workshop and spread to the newly constructed store.

The new building was totally gutted.

Fortunately no one was injured in the fire.

Redden's says it's temporary store is back up and running and they will be honouring all reservations made for this weekend.
